Privacy Policy

Effective Date: 7 September 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Spiel ("we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our iOS application. Spiel is published by All American Atlas LLC, a Colorado limited liability company.

By using Spiel, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. What Spiel Does

Spiel gives you a random topic, a few minutes to read about it, and then records you speaking about it for one minute. The recording is sent to our server, which forwards it to a speech-to-text provider so we can count filler words, measure your pace, and show you how long you spoke cleanly. The results come back to your phone. That round trip is the only reason your voice leaves your device.

2. Data We Collect

We do not collect your name, your email address, or any account profile. There is no sign-in.

Your recordings. The audio of each take is sent to our server and on to our transcription provider so it can be turned into text and measured. Recordings are stored on your device and are deleted automatically after 30 days. You can delete any recording yourself at any time.

Your transcript. The text of what you said is returned to your device and stored there alongside the recording. It is not retained on our servers after the measurement is returned.

An anonymous installation identifier. A random identifier created the first time you open Spiel. It is not your name, email, phone number, Apple ID, advertising identifier, or device serial number, and it is never shown to you. It exists so that repeat use can be counted per installation rather than per event.

Things you tell the onboarding. Spiel asks your age and a few questions about your goals to size the numbers it shows you on the next screen. These are used once, on your device, to produce that screen. They are not sent to our servers.

Product analytics. A short, fixed list of events describing which parts of the app were used — that a paywall was viewed, that a setting was changed, that support was contacted. These carry no audio, no transcript, no topic text, and none of the words you spoke. They are attached to the anonymous installation identifier above, never to a name or an email.

Session replays. For about 30% of sessions, PostHog also records a replay: a series of screenshots of the screens you see, played back so we can watch where onboarding and the paywall lose people. The camera view and your recordings are masked out, so a replay never contains your face, your voice, or your take. Replays are attached to the same anonymous installation identifier, never to a name or an email, and are deleted after 30 days.

Advertising measurement. We advertise Spiel, and we need to know whether those ads work. When you first reach the wheel, iOS asks whether you allow Spiel to track you. If you allow it, Meta's software in the app may read your device's advertising identifier and report two things to Meta: that the app was installed, and that a subscription was bought, with its price. If you decline, no advertising identifier is shared and Apple's own SKAdNetwork tells us only, in aggregate and without identifying you, that an install came from an ad. Meta's software also reports its own crashes and basic diagnostics to Meta. This is the only information we share for advertising. It never includes your recordings, your transcripts, your topics, your onboarding answers, or anything you said.

Support messages. If you write to us through the in-app chat, your message and the anonymous installation identifier above go to our support provider so that a person can answer you. The chat may ask for an email address so a reply can reach you when the app is closed; giving one is optional. Nothing you record is attached to a support conversation unless you attach it yourself.

Technical information in transit. When your device contacts our server, the server necessarily sees your IP address as part of the connection and uses it to rate-limit abuse. We do not build profiles from IP addresses and we do not store them in a database.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use this information to:

  • Transcribe your take and calculate your speaking measurements
  • Return those measurements to your device
  • Understand which parts of the app are used, in aggregate
  • Prevent abuse of our service
  • Manage your subscription, if you have one
  • Measure whether our advertising works, if you allowed tracking
  • Answer your support messages

We do not sell your data. We do not use your recordings, transcripts, or onboarding answers for advertising. We do not use your recordings or transcripts to train our own models.

4. Third-Party Services

We rely on the following providers to operate the app:

  • PostHog — for anonymous product analytics and session replays
  • Deepgram — to convert the audio of your take into text
  • Apple — to process subscription purchases
  • RevenueCat — to manage subscription status
  • WishKit — to receive feature requests you choose to send us
  • Crisp — to run the in-app support chat
  • Meta — for advertising measurement: install and subscription events only, and your advertising identifier only if you allowed tracking

These providers handle data according to their own privacy practices. PostHog's policy is at https://posthog.com/privacy, Deepgram's at https://deepgram.com/privacy, RevenueCat's at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy, WishKit's at https://www.wishkit.io/privacy-policy, Crisp's at https://crisp.chat/en/privacy/, and Meta's at https://www.facebook.com/privacy/policy/.

Your audio is sent to Deepgram solely to produce your transcript. We have opted out of Deepgram's model-improvement programme, so your recordings are not used to train its models.

5. Subscriptions

Spiel offers optional paid subscriptions. Purchases are processed by Apple. We never receive or store your card details. Apple tells us only whether a subscription is active.

6. Your Privacy Controls

Since no account is created, there is no user profile to delete.

Your recordings and transcripts live on your device. Deleting a take removes both, and every recording is deleted automatically after 30 days. Deleting the app removes everything it stored.

You can stop all collection at any time by revoking Spiel's microphone permission in iOS Settings, or by deleting the app.

You can decline the tracking prompt when it appears, or turn tracking off later in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking. Either way no advertising identifier is shared with Meta.

California residents. We do not sell your personal information. Sharing install and subscription events with Meta may count as "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising under the CPRA. You can opt out by declining the tracking prompt, or by emailing us with the subject "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information". We will not treat you differently for exercising any privacy right. Residents of other US states with comprehensive privacy laws have similar rights to access, delete, and opt out of targeted advertising; the same email reaches us for all of them.

If you believe we hold data associated with your device and you would like it deleted, contact us at support@spiel.so and we will respond within 30 days.

7. Children's Privacy

Spiel is intended for users aged 13 and over, and our App Store age rating is set to match. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have, we will delete it promptly. Contact us at support@spiel.so.

8. Data Location

We operate from the United States. If you use Spiel from elsewhere, your information is processed in the United States by us and by the providers listed above.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected with a new Effective Date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes go into effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

10. Contact

If you have any questions about this policy or your data, reach out to us at support@spiel.so.
